Online Journals have always baffled me. To me a Journal is something you hide away in a drawer with a lock because it has things in it that are potentially embarrassing or offensive. Or something where a scientist puts his top secret findings. Not something you want the world to see plastered to a billboard on the information highway.
However...
The fastest way for me to lose interest in something i am writing is to know that it well never be read. I get a kick out of having people talk about my writing, so if I know I'm not getting that kick i feel defeated. And so far no one has ever read anything I've put online but the possibility of having it read is still there. So an online journal that never gets read provides both motivation and privacy.
Which is all the reason anyone would ever need to blog.
